Kantha work

Kantha work is basically a running stitch done by hand inside a design and its final appearance looks very beautiful .It is the most popular form of embroidry practised by the rural women of india.A single shade of thread or different shades of thread can be used according to the taste of the person.
The minimum requirements needed to do kantha work are as follows:
• Embroidery Frame
• Embroidery Thread
• Needle
• Tracing Paper
• Carbon Paper

Kantha work is a craft which is famous in Bangladesh and West Bengal. Kantha stitch is also used in Quilting. Women in Bengal usually take an old sari and a cloth and pack them with kantha work , this can be used as a bedspread or a light blanket.

Nakshi  Kantha is a name which resulted out of colourful patterns and designs that were embroidered.The kanthas were originally made up of several layers of discarded dhoti and the thread which they used was of the thread which came out of the sari border.The actual embroidery started out of the centre usually with the traditionally red lotus which moved outwards.

The different typesof kantha are as follows:

Running stitch : kantha is again subdived into Nakshi which is again subdived into scenic kantha and motif kantha.

Lohori kantha: This is derived from the persian word “lehr” which means waves.

Lik or Anarasi (pineapple) kantha

Sujni kantha
