The most popular and the oldest name in Indian fashion industry is the name of ritu kumar, every fashion freak might be knowing this name.
To start with she wanted to revive the old Indian craftsmanship of India she wanted to make this popular . She discovered that Indian people have immense craftsmanship quality within them so why not revive it back! She thought that handwork is better than the machine and it looks much more incredible. So she first started of with hand blockprinting in a small village near kolkatta. And for the past 28 years there is no looking back for her . The traditional handwork which was forgotten was revived by Ritu Kumar once again.
Ritu Kumar was the first designer in India to bring the term “Boutique” . The fabrics that she mainly works on are Cotton, Silk and Leather and her designs are truly marvellous.
IN the year 2002 the brand LABEL was launched along with her son Amrish. This brand is mainly a fusion wear for the contemporary women of today this brand can b found at all ritu kumar outlets or individually also.
She has been designing for many bollywood stars and for the miss India beauty peagents also. Internationally the prominent personality for whon she has designed are lady Diana and jemina khan.
In October 1999 Christis published her (Ritu Kumar) book “Costumes and Textiles of Royal India” which tells us about the art the textiles of royal India it starts from the Mohen jo daro era till the present era.
The awards that she has won are:
• Lifetime Achievement Award set by NIFT
• Outstanding Woman Entrepreneur Award by PHDCC
• Lifetime achievement award at the Kingfisher Fashion Fantasia, July 2000 in Bangalore.
