Sabyasachi Mukherjee
Sabyasachi Mukherjee from the city of Kolkatta uses to sell junk jewellery and then came into designing by graduating from NIFT in 1999 with three awards to his credit, Soon after four months after graduation he launched his own label known as “Sabyasachi” which retailed to major stored across India.
In the year 2001 he won the most outstanding young designer award by Femina which took him to London for an Internship under the designer Georgina Von Etzdorf who’s in Salisbury. And in the year 2002 he made his debut by participating in the Lakme India Fashion week and was appreciated both nationally and globally. In 2003 he made his first appearance internationally and he was the winner of Mercedez New Asia Fashion week in Singapore.
In the year 2004 he was the only Indian designer to be invited for the Milan fashion week.
Sabyasachi Mukherjee has also done costume designing for few films. He entered the film industry by designing for Black for this he has also won an award for the best period costume. The other films for which he designed were Laaga Chunariye Main Daag and Baabul. He loves to experiment with clothes of all types be it cottons, chiffons, georgette, crepes etc he’s a very young innovative designer.
Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s inspiration for clothes were the tribal people, Gypsies, Prostitutes, Antique textiles of India and the cultural costume of his homeland Kolkatta.
He uses the most uncommon fabric for his costumes and his concept is mostly medieval. Sabyasachi designs international class silhouettes which always have an Indian touch to them.
In the upcoming New York fashion week he will launch his own Jewellery line, its nothing new for him as when he was a student at NIFT he would make costume jewellery and sell it. He says that very intricate work is done on the jewellery and he would later on launch his own jewellery brand under the name “Gaja”. He says that the jewellery that he designs will also be traditional like his clothes he wants to make the gold jewellery trendy as he says that some people think that its not.
